The unusually pure limestone found in what is now the Fiborn Karst Preserve led to development of Fiborn Quarry, which operated from early 1905 until January 1936. The quarry mined, crushed and shipped limestone for use mostly in steelmaking, but also calcium carbide manufacturing and road building. Hidden in the woods in the central-eastern Upper Peninsula not far from Trout Lake are the remnants of the old Fiborn Quarry. The Fiborn Limestone Co. at its peak had two locomotives and a small town of 75 people that worked for the quarry.

It makes an interesting and eerie… Circumstances moved beyond Fiborn Quarry as a site of industry and livelihood. Traces of its history dispersed as the people did, leaving little record at the site other than the quarry and the fading remnants left in the wake of a vanished community.

Fiborn Quarry was created by a partnership of the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad in 1904.
