The ‘bio-based economy’ represents an increasing area of global development and covers a wide range of activities incorporating bio-based materials. Biobased Economy The bioeconomy encompasses the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources, residues, by-products and side streams into value added products, such as food, feed, biobased products, services and bioenergy. A biobased economy is also known as biotechonomy or bioeconomy. It refers to economic activities developed from research and scientific work that mainly focuses on biotechnology.

De Biobased Economy (BBE) is een economie die gewassen en reststromen uit de landbouw en voedingsmiddelenindustrie inzet voor niet-voedseltoepassingen. Een economie die biomassa toepast voor de productie van materialen, chemicaliën, transportbrandstoffen en energie (elektriciteit en warmte).

A biobased economy aims to recreate many of the products we use today only using renewable organic matter (biomass). Biochemical research has shown that it is possible to create fuels, chemicals, plastics and more using biomass rather than fossil fuels.

Aim is to understand the contribution of small forest owners in the transition to wood based bioeconomy in Europe.
